Where does your love of music come from? (Discussion)

For me, my dad always instilled an appreciation for all sorts of music. I started learning piano when I was four. Since then I’ve learned instruments such as the guitar, violin and harmonica. Today I respect musicians for their efforts and find live music really great.

One experience I had that really got me interested was something called “Opera Under The Stars”, a free concert hosted by the government in Ottawa. A full-out concert with orchestra and established singers came to sing famous pieces from various operas outdoors at night. It was concluded by fireworks. Seeing all these people attend, sitting on the lawns with their wine and cheese they brought with them, and enjoy beautiful voices under the stars really deepened my appreciation for opera music. I find that live opera evokes an emotion like no other – if you haven’t experienced it, I highly recommend it!

What experiences have you had that has shaped the kinds of music you listen to?

I agree – the experience of listening to music live is totally awesome! I’ve heard a couple of bands from time to time, but the best experience is an “unplugged” one. More specifically, a “one man band”, or a one man, one guitar, one mic!

What actually got me on to music was hearing an 80 year old man play a Beatles number and sing along. He was playing both the rhythm and the bass lines at the same time on an old acoustic guitar. The simplicity of the whole thing brought a smile to my face, and I’ve been hooked to it, ever since!

My first association with music had been at my neighbour’s house where the lady was a music teacher.I used to keep listening to her whenever she had classes. She came one day to my mom and told her how i would keep listening to her and suggested her to send me to her for music lessons.I was around 4 then. I would keep playing the harmonica at her place without any tune and she kept encouraging and appreciating it.More than 16 years after that i don’t get much time to practice singing but my love for music gets reinforced whenever I sit and practice.

Where was I when this discussion started?

I wasn’t big on music from an early age, to be honest. My parents like to listen to oldies, but not all the time, and I never had to take music in school. I sort of had to discover it all by myself when I got to high school and started buying CDs of artists I’ve heard of, and got to know lots of great bands. I shaped my own taste, just listening to music I could connect to. I’ve started singing whenever I was alone, all the time. Then I started going to concerts, which I discovered was an amazing experience. Last summer I decided I’m buying a guitar, and I did, so now I can play a little while I’m singing. It’s great.

One incredible experience I had was going to a show at a club in downtown Toronto. It was an international band not many people know, so the place wasn’t packed, but I’m well aware of them and knew their entirely repertoire by heart. I stood practically on stage, staring my favourite bassist in the eye (freaking him out a bit, actually, I was wearing my glow-in-the-dark orange jacket in the middle of summer), and singing alone. I high-fived the lead singer. It was insane. That was the day (night) when I really got into the true spirit of rock.

Your stories are all great though, let’s hope other people contribute too!
