To get you into the SWING of things, I’ll be posting a Jazz Song of the Day every so often. I’ll also provide a little background info on the piece or musician. Hope you enjoy them!

Today’s jazz song is called Lament by the musician Moondog. You can check out the song here.

Moondog’s real name was Louis Thomas Hardin. He was a composer, poet, musician of several instruments and also a cosmologist. Craziest of all, he was blind! Later on in life, he decided to intentionally live on the streets. He became known as the “The Viking of 6th Avenue” and wore homemade clothes based on his interpretation of Thor, the Norse god.

This song was later remixed into a jazz electronica song called “Get a Move On’, by Mr. Scruff.

Today’s jazz song is Dear Lord by John Coltrane. It has a nice steady pace, and the saxophone is quite splendid to listen to. Feel free to post your own “jazz songs of the day” if you want to. Night, folks!

Today’s jazz song is Hymn to Freedom by Oscar Peterson. This Canadian pianist wrote this song himself and it became an important song for the civil rights movement.

Today’s jazz song is After You’ve Gone. Many performers have sung this jazz standard, from Bing Crosby to Judy Garland. Rocker Fiona Apple has also sung a cover of it. You can also watch Jack Immel play it solely on the xylophones, Rita Reys and the Dutch Swing College Band, or even young American Idol auditioner Samantha Sidley sing it. My favourite version is Samantha Sidley. :)
