Jazz is dead. (Discussion)

Even though this might sound strange coming from a jazz lover and the creator of this Jazz community – but I think jazz is a dying art form. I think the spirit of jazz has entered new ways to express itself – like rap, spoken poetry and film. We have these new technologies and mediums which allow creativity to flow in ways we have never known before.

In one of my lessons, “Is Jazz Dead”, there is a quote:

“The jazz body is dead but the spirit of jazz is alive…the body is dead because inherently the material of jazz does not allow for further growth…Since the jazz body cannot grow, it can only repeat itself. In so doing, it is stagnant. in so doing, it is dead.”

Once you do something enough times, it’s not new anymore. You have to find something else fresh and exciting. And that improvisation and “newness” is what jazz is all about. What we love about the jazz of the past was the fact that it was so new and different, and that it shaped our history and our cultural preferences. Now that these changes have already occurred as a result of jazz, where can we turn to next?

Not being a major jazzie, I still agree. I think jazz evolved and gave birth to some other great music styles, but right now it’s pretty much dead.

Rock is dead too. As a rocker, I know that. The whole premise of rock was rebelling against the mainstream, beating the “man”. Once rock became mainstream itself, it lost its purpose and started decaying, until it reached today, and now pure rock is practically non-existent.

That’s just how music evolves. Styles are formed out of an era, a way of life. And just like life goes on constantly evolving and changing, music styles rise and die with it. That’s reality for you.

Hahaha. I think the spirit of jazz lives on in artists like Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu, but they haven’t been out in a while. Lauryn Hill kind of went bezerk from all these outside influences so she hasn’t done much work in recent years – but she was genius at the time she was out.

Even Kanye West sort of embodies that spirit of jazz – rebellion, freedom, etc. I think electronica will become mainstream in the future as well…who knows?

Isn’t it all the same, when you look deep down to it? Jazz, rock, rap… it’s all about rebelling, freeing yourself from the norms. The spirit of jazz will always live on because there’s always a need for young people to feel that way. The actual jazz music is a different story… yeah, there are some active jazzists out there (not all too well familiar probably), but it’s not the same as it was years ago.

Yeah, electronica may very well become the new mainstream music line. I’m suddenly reminded of that Futurama episode (set in the year 3000) where Fry listens to Baby Got Back, then Leela says “stop listening to classical music”. You think it’ll ever get to that kind of point? That would just be so wrong.
